After careful consideration of the Kashag (Tibetan Cabinet) request for Tibetans and supporters not to protest during Hu Jintao’s visit to the United States this week, Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) has chosen to continue with our planned demonstrations. We did give very serious consideration to the Kashag’s appeal and consulted with SFT members, supporters and other stakeholders in the process of making this decision.
There has been no tangible change in the situation on the ground inside of Tibet. In the absence of measurable improvements, we will not suspend efforts that we believe are critical to furthering the Tibetan cause. SFT supports the Tibetan Government-in-Exile’s efforts to bring about a negotiated solution to the Tibetan plight. However, SFT’s role is to pressure the Chinese government for an end to its occupation of Tibet.
We believe China’s interest in dialogue stems in large part from the international Tibet movement’s ongoing campaigns for human rights and freedom in Tibet. The Chinese Government is using the potential for negotiations as leverage to demand a halt to the international protests which shame the Chinese leadership. We believe that without visible public pressure, the Chinese Government would find no reason to resolve the Tibetan issue.
SFT is committed solely to justice for 6 million Tibetans. The responsibility for each day that this goal has not yet been realized belongs to the Chinese government and the Chinese government alone.
