It’s never good when protestors almost out number your shareholders and corproate executives at the company’s Annual General Meeting. Well, this was the situation HDI/Continental Minterals found itself in yesterday when Tibetans and their supporters hijacked the AGM to protest the company’s mine activities in Tibet. Below is a short exerpt from SFT UBC president Tsering Lama, who along with 3 others attended the meeting to demand Continental withdraw from Tibet.

The presence of around twenty Tibet supporters yesterday at Continental Minerals headquarters was a resounding success. Members of Students for a Free Tibet and Canada Tibet Committee displayed two massive banners that read: HDI/ Continental Minerals: Hands off Tibet! Along with these were placards reading: “Continental Minerals profits off Tibet’s genocide, and “Shame Shame Continental Shame”. We also did political theatre with a Tibetan monk tied up playing tug of war with a Continental worker for a pot of Tibetan gold. We attracted curious onlookers on the busy road as well as security guards who took notice but engaged positively with the protesters. Our spokesperson also did interviews with local reporters.

Two members of Students for a Free Tibet and two members of Canada Tibet Committee gained access into the AGM. When the President of Continental and his lawyer came out to greet us, we reminded him that he had essentially invited us present our concerns at the AGM, at which point he looked taken a back. Continental has claimed that it is better for Western companies rather than Chinese companies to exploit Tibet’s resources and we were there to let them know that exploitation and everything that goes a long with it is destructive regardless of who does it.

The AGM was a relatively small affair with two other shareholders and a dozen or so board and staff members (so we outnumbered the shareholders!). Once inside, Gelek presented a heartfelt statement from the point of view of a Tibetan and the suited men looked very uncomfortable and unprepared. Continental’s President and Gelek discussed the fundamental issue of TIbet being an occupied territory and the abuses suffered by Tibetans under Chinese. We repeatedly urged them to withdraw from Tibet and highlighted the impossibility of honest consultation with Tibetans who live under the Chinese gun.

After an hour of Tibet dominating the agenda, the meeting ended but not before we reminded them that we were just a small proportion of the people globally who know what’s going on inside Tibet and who will continue to pressure Continental and the other Canadian mining companies to withdraw. This is just the beginning.

I thought this is the best way to contact you guys. please read the following as I really want the Bloggers for Tibet to happen.

It is time, please support freedom struggle of Tibet this one day

Dear Friend,

Let us unite in this global mission.

“Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” Martin Luther King Jr.

“The jaws of power are always open to devour, and her arm is always stretched out, if possible, to destroy the freedom of thinking, speaking, and writing.” John Adams

“I believe the highest aspiration of man should be individual freedom and the development of the individual.” Ronald Reagan

Many people in the world do not know that Tibet was once an independent country but is now under Chinese occupation. The people of Tibet are living under oppression of the Chinese authorities for more than 60 years and the world has not heeded Tibetan’s cry or supported its struggle for independence whole heartedly. This is the time we all can express our sympathy and support to the people of Tibet as individuals and declare our moral support to them. This is what we can do

According to Tibet’s Government in Exile website over 1.2 million Tibetans have died as a direct result of the Chinese invasion and occupation of Tibet. Today, it is hard to come across a Tibetan family that has not had at least one member imprisoned or killed by the Chinese regime. Under Chinese invasion the whole of Tibet has been turned into a vast network of prisons and labor camps. There are reports that China even resorted to massacre of prisoners to keep the prison population within manageable limits.

Big corporations like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft bowed to the pressures of Chinese government and censor search results so that information like Tiananmen Square massacre will not be accessible to the people of China. They block out information about Democracy and human rights. Tibetans don’t want to live under Chinese dictatorial communist government. They want freedom, they want Democracy. Please join us to blog about Tibet on July 6th “World Tibet Day which is the birthday of the Dalai Lama. We urge the blogging world to declare it as “Bloggers for Tibet Day. Please spread the word and blog about Tibet on July 6th. Let us create a momentum for freedom of Tibet as never before. If you don’t have a blog please visit us to know more about the struggles of Tibetans and see if you can help in any other ways.

We have set up a blog at http://voiceofambition.com/Tibet to track all the information and provide one stop for all blogging activity about Tibet. We also want to provide authentic information about various Tibet organizations. Please join us. If you can help us maintain the blog please contact us at blog.friendsoftibet@gmail.com . You can write articles to be published at this blog.
