Tibetans and mountaineers describe shooting at Nangpa Pass

Radio Free Asia posted statements today from Tibetans and climbers who witnessed the deadly shooting at Nangpa Pass. The eyewitness accounts add to the mounting evidence that completely contradict the Chinese government’s outrageous claims.

Here’s an excerpt from one interview:

“There was no one who fought with the Chinese soldiers. I saw everything and in fact I am only Tibetan who saw everything. I threw my bag on the side of road and entered in the camp of the Western climbers, said one man, who said he had hidden in a toilet at a mountain-climbing camp.

“I concealed my other stuff behind the tent and put on a cap and stood in the midst of the Western climbers. I saw Chinese [troops] shooting at the Tibetans. All were running as fast as they could in the snow and no body tried to fight back.

Those interviewed at the Tibetan Reception Centre in Kathmandu also describe the emotional shock and trauma of the fleeing Tibetans. Clearly, these were not people capable of confronting armed Chinese guards. Rather they were ambushed in a manner that is incomprehensible, deplorable and once again indicative of the Chinese government’s complete disregard for Tibetan lives.

“It was so tense and confusing that I just thought of staying alive and escaping. I couldn’t think of anything else or help the others.â€?

“I think the Chinese fired for about 15 minutes. I felt bullets whizzing past my ears. In fact I felt about five bullets pass by me and luckily they missed me. I was so frightened that I crawled in the snow using my hands and feet. The snow was about knee-deep, he said.

Judging from this irrefutable evidence of Chinese abuse of escapees, we have both the need and the opportunity to truly shame the Chinese government in front of the whole world.

Hi there, United States beareau of Democracy, Labor and Human Rights just released the 2006 Religion Freedom Report in Tibet. I thought you guys might need this. Here is the link.
    Thank you.

“irrefutable evidence ..” my foot indeed.
The two distinct videos – one showing someone shooting, and another someone falling down (not necessary being shot) concatenated together is irrefutable proof of the alleged story, and so swiftly investigated and judged by a so-called reporter and jury and judge, must be an insult to those who believe in fair play and honesty. Really, my sensibilities are offended by such purported Human Rights activists’ reporting.

If you do not have integrity in reporting, you will ulimately fail to manipulate people’s minds.

    Boo-fucking-hoo.

Your sensibilities are more outraged by how the murder of innocent refugees is reported than the fact that Kelsang Namtso was gunned down in cold blood. You have told me all I need to know about your capacity for reasoned thought and compassionate respect for human life. What a sad, sorry person you must be Xu Yin2.

    @ Xu Yin2

Yes, I understand it must be hard to live an adult life while your IQ borders that of idiocy when it comes down to Tibet. And then even to use a computer!

    A. A medical doctor, teammember of a mountaineering expedition on Cho Oyu, calls the Philippine Daily Enquirer in his home country, in tears, on Saturday September 30, to tell of the massacre that happened in front of his very eyes.

    B. A US mountainguide manages to send an e-mail straight from Cho Oyu basecamp to ExWeb in the early hours of October 2.

    C. Scores of mountaineers have been interviewed ever since, starting with interviews by satphone and later in person by reporters of international media, once climbers had returned to Kathmandu where it was safer talking.

    D. Chinese Embassy staff in Kathmandu starts hunting foreign climbers and their Sherpas in the Nepali capital, and tells them to shut up.

    E. The Chinese government officially says they know of no incident on Nangpa La.

    F. Then a Slovenian climber sends several photos, which are immediately being published.

    G. The Chinese government, within hours, changes its stance and comes with a story about a group of people who would have attacked its PAP on Nangpa La. PAP, subsequently, shot in self defence. One of the persons died later from altitude sickness (sic!), according to Beijing.

    H. Two Romanian climbers, one of them a cameraman, confirm their earlier statements by supplying a video. The video footage corresponds with earlier statements from many a climber, and it also corresponds with the photos that were meanwhile submitted. In addition: the video corresponds with statements given by Tibetan refugees – victims of the vicious attack – who managed to escape to Nepal and spoke with media persons in Kathmandu.

    I. And by October 17 naturally more photos can be released by the Intl. Campaign for Tibet. Photos taken by a British mountaineer who was smart enough not to bring them up in conversation untill he returned home, where they could be thoroughly investigated first before being published.

    J. Statement in connection with one of those photos:
“PAP personnel at advance base camp, Cho Oyu. The British climber stated that at least one of the security personnel present filmed individual mountaineers present at advance base camp at around the time of the incident.”
Is that intimidating? You bet it is! And again, it corresponds with previous statements from mountaineers about the whole atmosphere in Cho Oyu ABC and BC suddenly being very tense, and with climbers who didn’t dare to do a thing for fear of causing even a lot more armed violence and killing by the PAP!

    K. GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS, CHINA!!!

    L. My personal view is that Chinese people in general shouldn’t comment on anything Tibetan. Most of them don’t even know where to find Tibet on a map, let alone they would know anything about China’s abhorrent history. They’ve all been brainwashed before we ever noticed it. Same with poor Xu Yin2 here.

I just show footage of vidio showing a few Tibetans escaping Tibet via the Nangpal La. Chinese can deny as much as they want, but the fact is “Abusing Himalayan People by Chinese authorities is well known. The followig step by step stories reveals the denial facts.

In 1993, a few of us went to Tibet via the Nangpa La for trading business. When we were returning home for Tingri (Gangar is the local name), Chinese military Land Rover followed us and took all the goods that belonged us. Thank good the milatry did not shoot us.

Similarly, in 1997, my brother and a few friends of his went for trading business in Tibet taking the some route. Like my case, the Chinese military that is station near Nangpa La fired a few shoot. Luckily, no one got hurt. The Chinese Army come crossing the river that lies between their camp and the path leading to Nangpa La. The Army confiscated my brother and his friends goods. They were also prisoned for a few days without any explanation.

Likewise, in 1960, my father was doing the some trading business via the Nangpa La route. His goods and everything confiscated by Chinese authories -including his earring (Alung).

There are many untold store exist in Khumbu area regarding Chinese abuse in Tibet. The above stories strengths the recent Chinese Army’s Abuse for the Tibetan Peopal.
