IOC shows spinelessness; French FM calls for boycott of Olympic opening ceremonies

Posted on March 18th, 2008 by Lhasa Rising in Olympics, Protests in Tibet

Well, the Interternational Olympic Committee has finally spoken up!  Previously, the IOC’s head, the spineless Jacque Rogge, had stated:

he was not fully informed about violent protests in Tibet and that efforts to improve human rights in China, the site of the Summer Olympics, are not his group’s responsibility.
«It is not our job,» Rogge told reporters.  «We are not an activist organization.»

Has Rogge finally grown a backbone?  It seems so, but only with respect to condemning Beijing’s air quality.  Apparently, Mr. Rogge feels this is an issue that deserves the IOC’s full attention (rather than the massacres being carried out by the Olympic host)

The International Olympic Committee acknowledged for the first time yesterday that air pollution could affect the health and performance of athletes at this summer’s Olympics in Beijing ….

The IOC needs to wake up to its moral responsibility.  First, it needs to immediately cancel any part of the torch relay that will go through Tibet, including Lhasa and Mount Everest.  This would be a needless provocation, and would almost certainly lead to protests by Tibetans — and the blood from the Chinese crackdown will be on the IOC’s hands.

Second, even if countries are not willing to boycott the entire Beijing Olympics, they should seize on the French Foreign Minister’s suggestion to boycott the opening ceremonies.  This is when China’s propaganda will be out in full force, displaying the “glory” of the Chinese regime, and will absolutely feature a sickening display of “happy dancing Tibetans.”
