New York City – On July 13, 2008, a new generation of young Tibetans rapped out to an attentive crowd of at least 500 in Union Square. The young Tibetan rappers are all members of the grassroots organization, Students for a Free Tibet, who organized this event.

The concert was an hour long, and was emceed by Tenzin Gaphell, 17. The performers/composers were high school and college students, including Renegade Momo, 23, MC Rebel, 21, TC, 17 and Soulja, 19.

The words ‘Free Tibet’ were heard throughout all of their lyrics, as well as original lines such as “Everybody’s family,” and “Please hand our place to us, we will forgive,” climaxing with MC Rebel leading the crowd in the chorus of the John Lennon classic ‘Imagine.’ One of the young rappers summed up the evening in his lyrics, “Tibet is a cause worth fighting for!”
