Dramatic Photos: Tibetans Detained After Anti-Mining Protest in Shigatse

Dramatic new photos obtained by RFA show Chinese security forces detaining up to 30 Tibetans in Shigatse after an anti-mining protest. On May 21st, local Tibetans in the U Yuk Sogchen sub-district of Namling Shigatse protested environmentally destructive gold mining activities which have affected their only sources of drinking water, grazing ground for cattle, and have brought an increasing number of Chinese miners to the region.

The protest took place after repeated appeals by Tibetans in Namling to the local authorities for an end to the hazardous gold mining.

These are incredible photos. I wonder how they were taken but in truth it doesn’t matter. They clearly show Tibetans have had enough of the Chinese government destroying their land!

These pictures are amazing. They portray exactly how Tibetans are being surpressed by the Chinese government. Tibetans have no freedom of speech; no freedom of movement; no freedom of religion. No freedom, whatsoever. It is their land, yet they have no power over it. Tibet is controlled by these butchers who think they are superiors and have the right to control. These Chinese are merciless, believes in no religion, therefore compassion and love doesn’t exist in them. They can continue on killing and torturing these simple compassionate-natured Tibetans, yet world will not know anything about it. Therefore, these pictures explore the world inside Tibet which is very sad. Kudos to those brave photographers and reporters. They have risked their lives, but worth it 110% My huge respects to those brave people.

Shameless Chinese plundering Tibetan land by using brutal army of communist while the world watches on.

  8. cobina-jane cummingNo Gravatar says:

Exactly! The world just looks on!
But while Tibetans are only prepared to wait and hope, nothing is acoumplished.a few scud missiles are what is needed

The second world war was against the Nazis, we didnt just pray and hope they would go away.

Evil has to be fought. Peace and compassion cuts no ice!
And lets face it, the chinese are evil and sub human.

Souith African president Jacob Zuma has just paid a state visit to China and signed new trade agreements. The Chinese economy is booming and yet Tibet remains poor and the people are made to endure the plunder of their natural resources. African people would not stand for the Chinese doing the same here but ignore the plight of of others, total political hypocracy!

  12. ChadNo Gravatar says:

China is one of the great evils in the world today. They support nearly every despot regime in the world in order to get favorable deals in extracting metals and minerals for their insatiable economic machine. With Tibet, because they couldn’t control it, they decided to take it over by invade it in 1950. The world must stand up to the Chinese peril.

I am shocked but not surprised. My own experience is that if we are not hypocrats, we can hardly achieve positions in society that can bring us true possibility with rights to make decisions towards progressive actions. Because of this, silent resistance was my only way to express myself. Now i feel i have to overwrite my basic attitude on these.
Knowing that up to this time all the aboriginals as well as so called small nations on Mother Earth can exist only on papers, at this very moment i can only wish Tibetans to remain Tibetans deeply in their mind & heart, remain clever & strong, feel the solidarity from the whole world. China’s blind & enormous ignorance brings cruelty that can never satisfied its owner but can multiply new types of cruelties on all beings.
All we are for making ignorance ready to take its final rest……with love & peace: Anna

It would be nice if China were to mine the true treasures of Tibet, thus taking with them compassionate wisdom and so much more.

Silly Chineese, they create much suffering for themselves and others with their destructive lust for a shiny metal.

Truly, ignorance is the root cause of suffering.

May the Chinese, one and all, attain healing and enlightenment. Until then all gold coming from Tibet should definately be classified as Conflict Gold.

    Thank You,
    Fred Wolff

  21. ReginaNo Gravatar says:

Please Make All Tibetan Gold Conflict Gold.
Tibetans have aright to their own lands and resources. They are not legally part of China. Tibetans are being imprisoned and tortured and made sick by the mining.
The world needs to step in and demand Tibetans be given back control of their country and the Democratic rights to free speech, practice of religion, Basic Human rights, right to vote, free press and control their own destiny and land.

    Sincerely,

    Regina Burke

It’s make long time with modration, what result for all Tibetain peoples ? we are all in confort, but Tibetains live in oppression since long time and no gouvernement in the world make really something to help them in a good way, only speaking to get themself good conscience. And what about Tibetain, suffering….HELP them more…..

  24. john wyndhamNo Gravatar says:

As usual the Chinese Regime is ignoring the wishes of the people in favour of economic greed and worse, flagrantly ignoring the UN Declaration on Human Rights. They clearly fail to understand their responsibilities both to the individual, and community at large both inside and outside of China. The Chinese Government’s behaviour with regard to their use of force whether by guns, torture, false imprisonment, economic suppression, religious suppression, racism, genocide, lack of educational opportunities, lack of health care and not forgetting endless propaganda, hardly qualifies them to be welcomed into the worlds community as an “equal”
