SFTer’s activists from the UW-Madison made an eloquent stand for Tibet this week at the “China Town Hall” organized by the National Committee on US- China Relations. After Gabriel Feinstein spoke about genocide and human rights at the Town Hall, he and other activists from SFT and the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress were ejected from the Town Hall.

Protesting against the horrible treatment of Tibet by China is a noble activity. But advancing a cause requires thoughtful and well planned activities. Disrupting an informational meeting about strengthening communication between the US and China is counterproductive. These protesters could further the cause more effectively by targeting meetings where attention can be focused on the US Government’s inexcusable silence. Protesting at this meeting was like lashing out at a cell phone because someone didn’t use it to deliver your message. It may satisfy your ego to vent, but you accomplish nothing.
Terry,
This meeting was not some ‘non-partisan’, China ‘Town Hall’, informational meeting. Academics can gather around and call these events dialogue, but in the end the facts are clear. The sponsoring organization of this event (NCUCR) publically honors CCP party officials. Wen Jiabao was given an honorary gala dinner by this org, all in the name of ‘non partisan’ dialogue. This is indifference to the realities that Tibetans face, and also a softening of China’s image. Tibetan students in Tibet are protesting against genocidal language policies, and while this is happening, UW-Madison Chancellor Biddy is meeting with CCP Education Ministers. What message does that send? Tibetans know that America has sold out. Ai Wei Wei, designer of the 2008 Olympic Staidum said, “I think every deal made in China is based on the sacrifice of a lot of people’s rights. All those profits come from a nation that sacrifices the freedom of speech and the right of a free press.” This is bigger than the US Gov’t and our message to China. This is a message to anybody who thinks that indifference is victimless, no matter what form it takes.
