March 10: Be in the Streets for Tibet

march 10_2011Saturday, March 10th, is Tibetan National Uprising Day and we hope you will join us in the streets for Tibet.

This moment stands apart in significance for the Tibetan people. In the past year, 22 Tibetans have set themselves on fire in eastern Tibet to call for freedom and the return of the Dalai Lama. A new wave of protest is sweeping Tibet.

On March 10, 1959, tens of thousands of Tibetans took to the streets of Lhasa, Tibet’s capital, rising up against China’s illegal invasion and occupation of their homeland. They surrounded the Potala Palace, the home of the Dalai Lama, to protect his life and the future of the Tibetan nation.

M10streetsFifty-three years later, Tibetans inside Tibet are unequivocally demonstrating that they will not be controlled by Beijing, nor can they tolerate the extreme repression they have been forced to endure for the past six decades.

Tibetans are risking everything to ensure their message is heard and acted upon by the outside world. From every corner of the globe, no matter how small the gathering, we must respond in solidarity by standing up for Tibet.

Join or organize a March 10th protest near you.

By being in the streets on Saturday, March 10th, together we will:

  • stand in solidarity with Tibetans inside Tibet to show them they are not alone and that the world is responding to their calls for freedom;
  • commemorate Tibetans’ courageous resistance and demand freedom and justice for the Tibetan people;
  • call our governments to action to challenge China’s repression in Tibet;
  • hold the Chinese government accountable for its extreme and violent policies against the Tibetan people;
  • demonstrate the global support for Tibet and stand with Tibetans in their defiance to China’s rule.

On March 10th, we will come together as a united voice to demand that the Chinese government withdraw its troops, end the violent crackdown, and heed the Tibetan people’s call for freedom.

Thank you for all that you do for Tibet,

Tendor, Kate, TenDolkar, Stef and all of us at SFT HQ
