The Potala Palace, once the home of the Dalai Lama now is a tourist hotspot costing 100yuan a person. But don't bother taking your camera. No pictures allowed! And out of the 5000 some rooms, you can only walk through about 15 of them, most of which are bare or have the walls covered. Makes you wonder where everything went huh?

Welcome back to IPFW - I hope you all had a great summer. Our current president Sara went to Tibet this summer and will be sharing photos and experiences with us throughout the year. We will be having bi-weekly meetings on Tuesday nights this semester - we will let you know the room number when we get it! Some big things this year:

Tibet Railroad - opened this summer, it takes travelers from Beijing to Lhasa and expected to expand all the way to Nepal. Not only is this railway an environmental disaster - one man has already died on it!

Beijing 2008 - The spotlight is on China. We must show the world the human rights viloations throughout China and especially in Tibet. Boycott Olympic merchandise and don't watch the games!

Welcome back to school everyone! On Tuesday Feb 7th we will be showing the film "Daughters of Everest" in Kettler G46 at 4pm. Chips and Soda will be provided so tell a friend!
About the film:
Daughters of Everest" brings a unique flavor to a familiar story: the attempt to climb Mount Everest. In 2000, the first-ever expedition of Sherpa women to climb Everest was organized. This captivating documentary gives a close-up account of the expedition. Although the Sherpa people are legendary for their unmatched skill in mountaineering, Sherpa women are discouraged from climbing Everest, relegated instead into support roles in the climbing industry of Nepal. Told from a woman's perspective rarely seen on Everest or off, this film is both a dramatic, inspiring Everest story and an absorbing portrait of the Sherpa community.
