Tonight, Students for a Free Tibet Canada was invited to speak at the Women’s Freedom Vigil in Toronto, organized by the Canadian Campaign for Free Burma.

This event featured a music performance and several notable guest speakers in honouring Aung San Suu Kyi and all women defenders of human rights.

It was a cold rainy morning, but we wanted to make sure those in the Chinese consulate were able to start the day off right with a healthy balanced breakfast of SFT kick-ass!

Today, Tibetans and supporters gathered at the Chinese Consulate in Toronto to take part in the
Global Day of Action for Tenzin Delek Rinpoche.

Tenzin Delek Rinpoche is a highly respected community leader and staunch advocate for the protection and preservation of Tibetan culture and the environment, was sentenced to death in December 2002 on false charges of exploding bombs and distributing separatist leaflets. His death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in January 2005 when a distant relative, Lobsang Dhondup, was executed. Tenzin Delek Rinpoche has maintained his innocence throughout his detention and, during a visit with family members in 2009, Tenzin Delek stated “I am not responsible for these explosions or any other illegal actions, they have pinned this on me…. If it is possible to appeal, there is hope that I may be cleared of all charges.”

The flame of a candle symbolizes perseverance, awareness, knowledge and spirituality. A symbol used by human rights groups, religions, hospitals and schools around the world, the candle is used as well to celebrate one’s day of birth, or to mourn someone’s passing. The Panchen Lama turned 21 years old on the 25
th of April, and we commemorated this event with a candle-light vigil co-organized with various other Tibetan organizations from Toronto.
Abducted and placed under house arrest along with his family since 1995, the Chinese government has yet to reveal the whereabouts or well-being of the once youngest prisoner in the world, the Panchen Lama, birth name Gendun Choekyi Nyima.
